CHARACTER ANALYSIS OF THE BLOOD PRICE BY ABBA A. ABBA

Ichie Agunze: He is the antagonist and a round character. He is a tyrant, who in the tradition of women snatching has the most women. He snatches Agunwanyi from her lover, killing him the process. He is one of the strongholds of the tradition of the village of Umuakaba. He loses his eyes when the women revolt. In the end, he asks for Agunwanyi's hand in marriage.

Ichie Agunze is one of the, if not the strongest pillars of the barbaric tradition shown in the play in Umuakaba. As a beneficiary, he refuses to let the tradition go for a civilized life until the women led by the protagonist uses force to make him submit. He is used to symbolize the dominant male ideaology.

Agunwanyi: She is the Protagonist and a round character. She is one of the many victims of the tradition. She bears in her heart the belief that a man and woman should agree to be as one and live so, without fear of greedy men who would kill the man and snatch the woman. With the help of her previous lover, she escapes Ichie Agunze's grip and runs to Okija, where she sees such a civilized place. Accepting the way of freedom, she rallies the wives of the Ichies and in one night kill two of them and blind Ichie Agunze. In the end, her lover refuses to marry her because her hands are full of blood and Ichie Agunze proposes to her.

She symbolizes the feminist. Although her methods would be criminal in these times, her determination and perseverance is worthy of emulation.

Okeke : Agunwanyi's escapee lover and a round character . He is a coward according to the old ways, and so he tricks Ichie Agunze, and runs away with Agunwanyi. After bowing to the pressure of his lover, he follows our protagonist to Okija where he learns of a better way and the way to establish it. Afraid of angering his ancestors, and being a coward he doesn't follow Agunwanyi to learn the way out of the "ancient night". In the end, he asks another woman's hand in marriage, because he learns that marrying Agunwanyi whose hands are full of blood would cause his untimely death.

He symbolizes indifferent citizens or people who do not fight for freedom.

Eze: He hosts Agunwanyi and Okeke when they escape from Ichie Agunze. He expresses the beauty of civilization. He is the one that shows Agunwanyi the way to escape the "ancient night ".
